Grant St, Noosa Heads

The site falls below street level down to a heavily treed gully and water course. The design is dominated by a single large skillion roof following the fall of the land covering a large single level floor plate that provides living space all on one level. It was important to achieve a single living level solution on this sloping site.

There is a significant setback to the side (north) boundary to enable good solar access to the living areas of the floor plate and the pool. The main pedestrian access from the street aligns with the pool and a landscaped slab sandstone stair creating an awareness of the complete length of the site right through to its bushland setting.

A large native pine tree was retained as a feature and to provide shade to this landscaped entry. At street level there is a double garage with internal stair access for day to day use as well as an additional studio space.

Materials and finishes are retrained and elegant responding to the projects beach side location and natural setting. Wide board timber engineered flooring runs throughout and timber veneers in the joinery work contrast with predominately white interior. Aluminium (natural anodized) sliding stackable panel doors and large awning windows enable the building to be opened up to make the most of natural ventilation.

There is an overall sense of lightness to the design. The dark masonry base contrasting with the white timber work works well. The white timber cladding
with exposed timber stud work gives a subtle reference to early Queensland houses. Sandstone stair detailing and timber decking enable the building to relate closely with the landscaping.

The project provides a wonderful space to live in amongst the trees.
